North Brother Island

Leprosy was a danger disease. The diseased were excluded from the society. That was more than biologic, was cerebral.

In the end of the XIX century and beginning of the XX, New York received a lot of immigrants, some of then were in a deplorable state. Those who could not afford a private clinic, were sent to North Brother Island.

For some, God was the only hope.

The North Brother Island worked out as a center for treatment of infectious diseases. The show must go on.

The disease did not choose names.

With the U.S. entry in the Second World War in 1942, this center was deactivated. In 1952 was reactivated to treat drug addicts.
